Social enterprise giant Jive has just filed its S-1, and will raise as much as $100 million in the offering.

Modeled to offer Facebook-like features to enterprises, Jive’s software combines computing with social collaboration to offer fully-featured social networks for businesses. Its suite of applications help businesses collaborate on a variety of tasks, including holding discussions, communication, sharing documents, blogging, running polls, and social networking features and more.

Some of the key information in the filing relates to revenue. For the years ended December 31, 2008, 2009 and 2010, and for the six months ended June 30, 2011, Jive’s total revenues were $16.9 million, $30.0 million, $46.3 million and $34.0 million, respectively.

The company actually took a loss in 2008, 2009, 2010 and the six month period ending in June 2011. Losses appeared to actually increase—the company lost $27.6 million in 2010, and $30.6 million this year. The company says that it is continuing to invest revenue back into infrastructure, development of and sales and marketing, and expects operating expenses to increase significantly.

Jive also says that it is in the process of transitioning its customer data centers from a third-party service provider to a co-located facility managed by Jive’s own network operations team, which will require significant capital.

As of June 30, 2011, Jive has 635 enterprise customers, including Hewlett-Packard Company, SAP AG, T-Mobile and UBS AG, with over 15 million users. The company currently had 358 employees as of June 30, 2011.

Jive says that it plans to use the proceeds of the offering to pay down outstanding loans ($20 million) and towards general corporate purposes, including working capital and potential acquisitions.

In terms of investment, Jive has raised a total of $57 million, and the company’s largest investor Sequoia Capital owns over a third of Jive (36 percent). Kleiner Perkins owns 14.24 percent of Jive.

IDC reports impressive year-over-year growth for global PC shipments of 27.1% in the first quarter of 2010, which has prompted the company to revise its projection for the entire year. In light of slow but certain economic recovery, IDC now foresees 19.8% growth in 2010, according to its Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker.

Unlike most of 2009, netbooks are no longer driving the volume as much as in recent times. IDC says the recent market recovery has notably seen a small rebound in higher priced computers, including e-readers and tablets.

Although low to mid-range portable PCs continue to dominate the market, desktop computers also recovered with its first yearly growth since the second quarter of 2008.

Zooming in on geographical trends, IDC reports growth was positive across both mature and emerging markets, although emerging regions did see a record high 37% year-over-year growth in the first quarter of 2010. The strong surge in volume brought a corresponding slowing of price declines over the past year, IDC adds.

IDC expects PC market revenue in 2010 to surpass that of the previous revenue peak in 2008, as more purchases shift to higher margin SKUs. Netbook volume growth is unsurprisingly expected to moderate, and its share as a percent of the total PC market is projected to stay under 12%. The main driver of growth will come from mainstream notebooks, still according to IDC’s report, particularly in emerging regions.

SEOUL (Reuters) – LG Electronics Inc on Thursday launched liquid crystal display (LCD) televisions that use light-emitting diodes (LED) as a light source, and said it was aiming to sell as many as 5 million units in 2010.

The South Korean flat-screen TV maker also reiterated its previously stated goal of selling 18 million LCD sets in 2009, to become the world’s second-largest maker of LCD televisions after domestic rival Samsung Electronics and ahead of Japan’s Sony.

Despite the global economic downturn that has devastated the consumer electronics sector worldwide, makers of flat-screen televisions have managed to weather the slowdown better than other industries.

LG and Samsung are betting on LED-backlit LCD televisions as future profit drivers in their display divisions. LED televisions are about a third thinner than older models using cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs), have longer lifespans and offer more vivid images, with greater contrast and color range.

Simon Kang, chief executive of LG’s home entertainment division, said the company was on track to achieve its earlier stated target of 18 million LCD televisions, adding that internal targets could be “stretched” even more.

LG said LED televisions, which make up only 2.6 percent of the total LCD set market, could represent as much as 20 percent of the market in 2010 and 40 percent of the total market in 2011.

The popularity of the new models will depend heavily on consumer acceptance of a significant price premium, which is anywhere from 50 percent to 70 percent over traditional LCD TVs. But LG expects the price differential to narrow rapidly to about 40-50 percent in 2010 and closer to parity in 2011.

LCD TVs make up about 60 percent of global TV shipments, according to research group DisplaySearch. LED TV sales are expected to grow more than tenfold this year to about 2 million units out of total LCD TV sales of 120 million.

The popularity of LED backlit LCDs is surging in the notebook and desktop computer markets, where DisplaySearch expects a penetration rate of 25 percent by the fourth quarter of this year, from about 12 percent in the first quarter.

Shares in LG Electronics rose 2.18 percent to 117,000 won on Thursday, in line with the broader market’s 2.12 percent gain.

LONDON (Reuters) – Memory chips for computers are likely to be in short supply by the second half of next year as consumers demand more capacity and companies embark on a delayed drive to replace PCs, industry tracker DRAMeXchange believes.

Prices for DRAM chips, the most common type of computer memory, have stabilized over the past two months after rising for most of the year as recession-struck chipmakers slashed capacity and capital spending, causing shortages.
DRAMeXchange forecast on Thursday that shipments of PCs would rise 13 percent next year, driven by notebooks, with 22.5 percent growth to 160 million units, and pared-down netbooks, set to rise 22 percent to 35 million units.
“DRAM will likely face a serious shortage in 2H10 triggered by the hot PC sales,” DRAMeXchange said. “The DRAM price decline will likely be eased in 2Q10. That is, DRAM vendors will have a great opportunity to remain in profit for the whole year.” Top U.S. memory chipmaker Micron on Tuesday delivered its first quarterly profit in nearly three years as rising prices lifted sales beyond expectations.
DRAMeXchange forecast that 2010 capital expenditure by DRAM vendors would rise 80 percent from this year’s record low to $7.85 billion, rising to $10 billion to $12 billion by 2011 or 2012.
Industry leader Samsung would spend $2.6 billion, it predicted. Fellow Korean chipmaker Hynix said on Thursday it planned 2.3 trillion won ($2.2 billion) in capital expenditure next year.

IT Europa announced today that it will stage the European IT Excellence Awards 2010 in London on 25 February 2010. The IT
Excellence Awards have been designed to recognise and reward excellence in
solutions provided by European IT and Telecoms Channels. The awards will bring
together leading ISVs, Solution Providers and Systems Integrators from across
Europe to demonstrate their ability to provide IT solutions for their
customers.

The awards are split into three sections.
The first set of awards are exclusively for Independent Software Vendors (ISVs)
highlighting the crucial role that applications play in the development of
customer solutions. The second set of awards recognise the vital role played by

As companies prepare for the economic recovery, many are poised to enter
2010 with renewed interest in improving their HR technology systems, processes
and organizational structures, according to experts at Watson Wyatt, a leading
global consulting firm.

“In the current economy, organizations will keep a watchful eye on their
spending as they analyze their investments in HR technology,” said Steve
Hitzeman, national leader for technology and administration solutions
consulting at Watson Wyatt. “Employers are likely to continue or even increase
their cost-savings initiatives by taking steps to globalize and streamline the
HR function, scrutinize their vendor relationships and strengthen their service
levels.” 

Watson Wyatt HR technology experts identify these emerging themes for 2010:

Scrutinizing vendor relationships and sourcing options. Employers
with vendor contracts that are up for renewal will evaluate whether they have
received optimal value from those relationships. For example, employers that
aren’t satisfied with their HR business process outsourcing might decide
whether to stay in their contracts next year, or revert to outsourcing to
multiple vendors with specialized services.

“Rather than place all of their eggs in one basket, many companies will
migrate to a blended, co-sourced service delivery model,” said Dan Vander Hey,
senior technology consultant at Watson Wyatt.

As disenchantment with the time requirement and expense of platform hosting
and technology upgrades grows, Watson Wyatt experts also expect many employers
will continue to embrace software-as-a-service (SaaS) options. These options
help reduce costs by providing access to software via an external provider.

Globalizing the HR function. A growing number of multinational
organizations are expected to focus on standardizing their HR processes,
organizational structure and systems, such as payroll, across borders. 

“In an increasingly global workplace, employers will be challenged to strike
a balance between having consistent standards for their HR technology and
processes across the different countries they operate in, while not losing
sight of region-specific issues,” Hitzeman said.

Investing in a consumer-grade experience for workers. Companies will
grow more comfortable with Web-based, consumer-oriented applications that
convey HR information through interactive and self-service tools. Many will
look to technology to boost employee collaboration and lower costs by expanding
the use of social media or leveraging their portals.

“The recession spurred many employers to assess their technology
capabilities and priorities,” said Hitzeman. “In the coming year, tight budgets
and cautious spending will compel many companies to look for a strong business
case that justifies taking action.”
