PowerCloud Systems, a spin-out of Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) that offers a ‘networking-as-a-service’ platform for OEMs and service providers, has raised $6 million in Series B funding in a round led by Qualcomm Ventures, with prior backers Walden Venture Capital, Javelin Venture Partners and PARC participating.

The capital will be used to enhance the company’s online software platform, CloudCommand.

The CloudCommand platform enables networking OEMs and service providers to integrate cloud capabilities with their wireless and wired networking equipment and to deliver networking-as-a-service-based solutions for SMBs.

CloudCommand’s initial implementations support Wi-Fi networking, and in 2012 the company says it will expand into additional networking categories.

PowerCloud Systems is not only a spin-out from PARC, but its technology is also supported by intellectual property developed at the research center, including 10 patents in areas ranging from cloud-virtualized network controllers to usable security.

The company has raised approximately $10 million to date.

Silver Tail Systems, a provider of predictive analytics for detection and prevention of online fraud, this morning announced that it has secured an additional round of funding from Citi Ventures, a unit of Citigroup.

This investment, the size of which was not disclosed, is part of a previously announced $20 million Series B funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz (closed in June).

Silver Tail Systems provides on-premise and SaaS solutions to protect operators of online properties that hold critical information, such as e-commerce, financial, government and consumer-facing website publishers and owners, from online fraud and abuse.

The company says it currently monitors more than 750 million users and more than 1.8 billion Web sessions per year.

NICE Systems this morning announced that it is to acquire UK company Fizzback for approximately $80 million in cash. Fizzback is backed by Advent Venture Partners, Nauta Capital and TAG.

Fizzback sends consumers requests for feedback relating to a specific interaction or transaction via mobile, web or social media. The feedback is then analyzed by Fizzback to determine a relevant response, and the company subsequently engages the consumer at the point of experience, for example in the contact center, branch, point of sale, mobile app, or on the Web.

Radiant’s SaaS caters to a variety of industries and markets including stadiums, arenas, cinemas, restaurants, gas stations, convenience stores, museums, wine and liquor stores and other speciality retail stores. The company offers hardware includes point of sale systems, kiosks, customer displays, terminals, servers and more. Radiant says it more than 100,000 installations worldwide.

NCR is using Radiant Systems to expand into another software vertical, in addition to its financial and retail businesses. NCR developers security technologies for the financial services market, retail technologies and sells self-service kiosks to the retail and hospitality, travel and gaming, healthcare, and entertainment industries. In 2009, NCR bought DVD-rental kiosk company DVDPlay.

Oracle this morning announced that it has agreed to buy Pillar Data Systems, a privately-held provider of SAN Block I/O storage systems based in San Jose, California, which is said to serve nearly 600 customers across 24 countries.

Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

An interesting purchase, particularly since Pillar Data Systems is majority-owned by Oracle founder and CEO Larry Ellison through his venture capital firm Tako Ventures. According to a 2005 CRN article, Ellison invested over $150 million in the business.

It’s worth nothing that Oracle claims the evaluation and negotiation of the transaction was led by an independent committee of Oracle’s board of directors.

Also, the transaction is structured as a 100 percent earn-out with no up-front payment.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in July 2011, exactly a decade after Pillar Data Systems was founded.

On a sidenote: kudos to Michael Romley, who predicted this transaction would (or should) occur back in September 2010.

ThingWorx, which provides a platform for the development of apps connecting people, systems and the physical world, this morning announced that it has acquired privately held, Rochester, NY-based Palantiri Systems, maker of the AlwaysOn software platform.

The combination of both companies, ThingWorx posits, will result in a single company that it says will “represent the catalyst for the next stage of the ‘connected device’ revolution”.

The acquisition integrates Palantiri Systems’ AlwaysOn real-time connectivity model and device collaboration solution with the ThingWorx platform, which extends the key functionality of the modern Web to the ‘world of things,’ to create a platform that amplifies the productivity of people through collective intelligence.

The AlwaysOn product suite essentially allows machines and production equipment to communicate with each other and the people responsible for their continued operation.

ThingWorx will remain in its Exton, PA headquarters. Palantiri Systems’ offices in Rochester, NY will be branded ThingWorx and will serve as a second location for the company.

The entire Palantiri Systems’ team will be joining the ThingWorx team.

ScaleXtreme, a vendor of cloud-based systems management products, this morning announced it has landed $11 million in Series B funding in a round led by Ignition Partners with participation from previous backer Accel Partners.

Frank Artale, managing director at Ignition, will join the board that includes Ping Li from Accel and ScaleXtreme’s Nand Mulchandani and Balaji Srinivasa.

ScaleXtreme says the additional capital will be used to accelerate the rollout of additional product capabilities, and boost marketing and sales efforts.

ScaleXtreme aims to transform the way IT administrators manage their Amazon EC2, VMware virtual machine and physical server deployments.

Time Warner Cable this morning announced that it will acquire cable systems serving approximately 70,000 basic video subscribers, 42,000 HSD subscribers, and 26,000 phone subscribers in Kentucky and Tennessee from NewWave Communications for $260 million in cash.

NewWave had been buying up many of these cable systems, some property acquisitions dating back to 2003. The company says it will now concentrate on “ongoing operations in other service areas”.

The transaction is subject to customary conditions, including FCC and antitrust approval, and is expected to close during the fourth quarter of 2011.

BMC Software has acquired GridApp Systems, which specializes in the automation of cloud database provisioning, patching and administration.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

With the purchase, BMC is expanding its current offering of application, server, network and client configuration management to include database automation.

GridApp’s solution is designed to reduce the cost and complexity with deploying and configuring enterprise databases in physical, virtual and cloud environments. The GridApp solution is already integrated with BMC BladeLogic Server Automation and is currently in use by multiple joint customers, according to the press announcement.

GridApp’s customers include Bank of America, GE, Lockheed Martin and Merrill Lynch – the company also boasts partnership agreements with the likes of HP, Oracle, IBM and Microsoft.

Founded in 2002, GridApp raised $5 million in Series A funding back in 2007, from Ascend Ventures, Advantage Capital, Rand Capital and Gefinor Ventures.
