Numecent, a stealth startup building a patented “cloudpaging” technology, just raised $2 million in Series A funding from undisclosed corporate investors. The $2 million tranche is a part of a larger $10 million funding round, and is in addition to the $7.5 million in seed funding the company has already raised from private investors. Exact details as to what Numecent is developing are not known, beyond a general description of what “cloudpaging” means, as provided by the company.

The term “cloudpaging,” says Numecent, refers to a specific (and patented) “push-pull” paging technology which allows software instructions and data to be demand-paged from the cloud in real-time. The company claims that cloudpaging will allow any software, app or game to pull this data on-demand to any connected device in a secure, metered and virtualized fashion. The company is even positioning cloudpaging as the successor to streaming, and holds 10 patents for application streaming and virtualization through its subsidiary, Endeavours Technologies. It’s also worth mentioning that Endeavors Technologies was spun out of a think tank for a DARPA project.

Numecent is also now claiming to have high-profile testers who have begun to deploy its hybrid-cloud solution in mission-critical environments. The company plans to exit stealth in March, at which time the company will reveal more details about the cloudpaging technology itself and how it’s being used.

Alongside the funding news, Numecent also announced that Osman Kent, previously the co-founder of 3Dlabs, has joined the company as the new CEO.

Earlier this month, Numecent launched an “application jukebox” for Red Hat, which allows traditional Windows applications to be delivered to Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization-hosted desktops.

The 4G wireless technology space is heating up, so expect vultures.

Acacia Research Corporation, a massive patent holding group with dozens of subsidiaries in the business of exploiting intellectual property by means of lawsuits and aggressive patent licensing schemes, this morning announced that it has acquired ADAPTIX, a 4G wireless technology company that originally started out in 2000 under the name Broadstorm and was owned by PE firm Baker Capital.

Acacia Research is paying $160 million for the company, which has $10 million in cash, primarily to obtain ADAPTIX’ portfolio of 230 issued and pending patents in 13 countries.

The patents in question are said to cover a broad range of 4G technologies, including OFDMA and MIMO.

NoSQL database company Neo Technology has raised $10.6 million in Series A funding led by Fidelity Growth Partners Europe with Sunstone Capital, Conor Venture Partners and Rod Johnson, the founder and CEO of SpringSource also participating in the round.

As the world of data explodes in volume and complexity, many applications and databases need to manage this influx of queries with high performance. Neo Technology provides enterprises with a NoSQL database that can scale to ever-changing data and its associated requirements.

Neo Technology delivers Neo4j, the NOSQL Enterprise Open source database to the enterprise. Broadcom this morning announced that it has agreed to acquire NetLogic Microsystems, which delivers a range of semiconductor solutions. Under the agreement, NetLogic shareholders will receive $50 per share in a transaction of approximately $3.7 billion, net of cash assumed.

Netlogic’s share price closed at $31.91 last Friday.

With the acquisition, Broadcom expands its infrastructure portfolio with a number of new product lines and technologies, including knowledge-based processors, multi-core embedded processors, and digital front-end processors.

NetLogic Microsystems is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, and has offices and design centers throughout North America, Asia and Europe.

The transaction has been approved by the Broadcom and NetLogic Microsystems boards and is subject to customary closing conditions. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2012.

Netlogic shares are up nearly 20 percent prior to market open. (Update: up 50 percent now)

Broadcom said it expects the deal to add 10 cents a share to non-GAAP earnings in 2012. The company today also reiterated its business outlook for Q3 2011 – the company expects revenue to come in at between $1.9 billion and $2 billion.

Joining recent tech companies MobiTV, Angie’s List, Brightcove, and Jive; Guidewire Software, a company that develops technologies for the insurance industry, has filed its S-1. The company aims to raise as much as $100 million in a public offering under the symbol “GWRE.”

Founded in 2001, Guidewire Software provides technology software to the property, casualty, and workers compensation insurance industry. The company offers a web-based claims system that supports various lines of personal, commercial, and workers’ compensation insurance; an enterprise application for coordinating, executing, and recording transactions; and a Web-based underwriting and policy administration system for personal and commercial insurance carriers. Basically, Guidewire, which is backed by U.S. Venture Partners, Bay Partners and Battery Ventures, automates the insurance industry.

While Guidewire’s product may not be as sexy as Pandora’s music radio service or LinkedIn’s professional social network, the enterprise company is actually making major revenue and profits. Guidewire brought in a healthy $144.7 million in revenue in 2010 and $121.5 million for the nine months ended April 30, 2011. Guidewire’s net income was $15.5 million in fiscal year 2010 and $33.5 million for the nine months ended April 30, 2011. And revenue and profit has grown consecutively over the past three years.

As of July, Guidewire had 101 customers, including big brands such as Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company. According to Gartner, insurance carriers spent $4 billion on software and $10.5 billion on IT services in 2010, so Guidewire is confident that they are part of a pretty fast-growing (and revenue-rich) industry.

For the most part, this year’s IPOs have been involving companies who offer consumer-focused products and services as opposed to enterprise companies. Fusion-IO, the developer of flash- memory technology for companies, started trading in June. And Jive, which develops a social network and collaborative platform for the enterprise, just filed its S-1, and could begin trading at the end of the year at the earliest.

Citrix this morning announced an investment in mobile technology company Core Mobile Networks, marking the third funding commitment for the company’s Startup Accelerator, its Silicon Valley-based seed investment initiative which debuted in December 2010.

Core Mobile Networks correlates information from enterprise IT systems with content in the cloud, and delivers it to mobile devices such as Apple’s iPhone and Android handsets over AT&T, Verizon, Sprint networks, in real-time, with contextual relevance.

The investment in Core Mobile Networks follows funding commitments made to Primadesk and in a stealth mode company. The program expects to announce more new investments in July as a result of the recent Citrix Startup Accelerator Global Challenge.

The size of the investment was not disclosed, but the Citrix Startup Accelerator program provides companies with seed funding ($100k-$400k) in addition to business mentoring, office space and technical resources.

Citrix also recently invested in GlassHouse Technologies and, more recently, Cotendo.

Cotendo, which specializes in cloud-based acceleration technologies, this morning announced that it has raised $17 million in funding from strategic partners Citrix and Juniper Networks (through its Junos Innovation Fund) and previous backers Sequoia, Benchmark and Tenaya Capital.

The company says the proceeds will be used to support its growth (particularly in Asia-Pacific and Latin America) and ramp up delivery of dynamic content for mobile and web applications.

Founded in 2008, Cotendo also has strategic partnerships in place with AT&T and Google.

Here’s how Citrix pitches its investment in the company:

“The synergy between the services and technologies of Citrix Systems and Cotendo blend on-premise physical and virtual appliances, content acceleration and cloud services that will accelerate and optimize delivery from the end user all the way to the enterprise over distributed networks, thereby improving end user experience from any location to any device.”

In addition, Cotendo this morning announced the launch of its Mobile Acceleration Suite, which it says will extend its web acceleration services to speed up delivery of mobile websites and applications. Cotendo is headquartered in Silicon Valley with R&D based in Israel.

Cotendo has raised $36 million in funding to date.

Flash memory storage solutions provider SanDisk has acquired Pliant Technology, a developer of enterprise solid state drives, the company announced this morning.

Under the terms of the agreement, SanDisk will pay approximately $327 million in cash and provide certain equity-based incentives.

Pliant Technology offers SSDs that integrate into enterprise information systems. The company has approximately 80 employees and is based in Milpitas, California.

The company raised over $50 million since its founding in 2006.

The transaction, which has been approved by the boards of directors of both companies, is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory review and approval, and it is expected to close by the end of SanDisk’s second fiscal quarter.

NVIDIA this morning announced its acquisition of Icera, which provides baseband processors for 3G and 4G cellular phones and tablets.

The acquisition, for $367 million in cash, has been approved by both companies’ boards of directors and is expected to be completed, subject to customary closing conditions, in approximately 30 days.

Icera holds more than 550 patents, and its high speed wireless-modem products have been approved by more than 50 carriers across the globe. Founded in 2002 and based in Bristol, England, the company has approximately 300 employees in seven countries in Europe and Asia, as well as the United States.

By combining the companies’ products and technologies, including its Tegra processor, NVIDIA aims to solidify its position in the growing mobile market:

By offering the two main processors used in smartphones (the application processor and baseband processor), the combined company will help OEM customers both improve their time to market and deliver the requirements of next-generation mobile computing. NVIDIA will also have approximately doubled its revenue opportunity within each device.

Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA, says the company intends to continue to collaborate with its existing baseband partners and “respect its customers’ preferences” in combining application and baseband processors.

NASDAQ-listed Limelight Networks this morning announced the acquisition of AcceloWeb, a Tel Aviv-based provider of technology that helps speed the presentation of websites and applications. We wrote about the company back in July 2009 when it was still called FasterWeb.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but we’ve learned that the transaction was completed with a combination of Limelight Networks common stock and cash. Founded in 2008, AcceloWeb is headquartered in Israel with US offices in Boston. 

YL Ventures, headed by Yoav Andrew Leitersdorf, participated in the transaction as an investor, strategic advisor, and board member of AcceloWeb.

Limelight hopes AcceloWeb’s technology, combined with its own web and application acceleration services, will help its customers improve the load time of their web-based applications and websites, thus increasing conversion rates and decreasing abandonment.

AcceloWeb says its technology requires zero configuration and does not require any changes to existing web development workflow, reconfiguration of site or application resources, installation of a hardware appliance or any server side, browser or desktop plug-ins.

Limelight Networks last week announced that it acquired web content management software maker Clickability for $10 million.

The company also reported earnings for the first quarter of the year, reporting a loss of $9.8 million on revenue of $49.8 million for its online content delivery systems.
